The Longest Suspension Bridge In The WORLD – RANDA, Switzerland

Nachdem wir bereits vor 4 Wochen von dem kleinen Ort Randa (Kanton Wallis) (genauer gesagt natürlich von Paul) eingeladen wurden die neue Europabrücke (neu Charles Kuonen Hängebrücke) als erste bewandern zu dürfen waren wir entsprechend gespannt was uns erwartet.

Der Tag begann früh, wie sich das für einen Wandertag eben gehört. 5 Uhr aufstehen, packen und los.

Ab ins Auto und auf die Autobahn. Die Route Richtung Lötschbergtunnel durchs Berner Oberland ist hierbei schon etwas Besonderes und eines der ersten Highlights auf unserer kleinen Expedition. Erstes Etappenziel, Kandersteg! Hier verladen wir unser Auto auf den Lötschbergzug und geniessen die Zugfahrt in kompletter Finsternis in unserem Auto schaukelnd auf dem Anhänger des Zuges

Am anderen Ende wartet dann auch schon das wunderschöne Wallis. Einmal ins Tal herunter und auf der anderen Seite wieder hoch. Vorbei an Aprikosenständen, Wasserfällen und den wunderschönen Bergen der Schweiz. Und 4 Stunden später sind wir schon in Randa angekommen, wo unser Startpunkt für unsere kleine Wanderung sein soll. Klein… Das dachten wir zumindest 😀 Aber dazu später mehr.

Wir werden herzlich von Paul (Paul ist der nette Herr von der Gemeinde Randa, der uns zu diesem Abenteuer eingeladen hat 🙂 ) empfangen und besprechen noch einmal kurz den Ablauf. Es war noch nicht 100% sicher gewesen, ob die Brücke schon begehbar sein würde wenn wir eintreffen. Zu unserer Begeisterung bekommen wir aber von Ihm das Go und unserer Tour steht nichts mehr im Wege.

Der Ort Randa (ungelogen eines der hübschesten Dörfchen, dass ich bisher in der Schweiz gesehen habe) zeigt uns direkt was uns auf den nächsten 3-5 Stunden auf dem Europaweg zur Charles Kuonen Hängebrücke erwarten wird. Steigung, Steigung und nochmal Steigung :D.

Wir haben von Paul eine wunderhübsche selbst gezeichnete “Wanderkarte” erhalten nach der wir uns halten (die neue Brücke ist noch nicht offiziell als Route aufgenommen und die Schilder unterwegs lotsen uns mit Freude auf den falschen Weg :D). Die Karte von Paul erweisst sich trotz seiner Schlichtheit als äusserst hilfreich. Nach ca. 1,5 Stunden erreichen wir nach einem steilen Marsch mit epischem Ausblick auf den Bisgletscher und den Schmalgletscher etwas erschöpfter als erwartet unser erstes Etappenziel, dass 9 Meter hohe Kreuz von Randa das man bereits aus dem Tal sieht. Auch hier einfach nur wunderschön! Eine riessige Wiese, Alpenblumen und eine Aussicht, die aus einem Film stammen könnte. Herrlich!

Nachdem wir hier etwas gegessen und unserer Bein-Akkus etwas aufgeladen haben, geht es direkt weiter. Wir wollen diese Brücke sehen.

Unterwegs kommen uns erfahrene Wanderer entgegen, bei denen wir nur staunen können (ich glaube wir brauchen etwas mehr Training). Diese Jungs und Mädels rennen den Berg geradezu herunter… Zu beneiden 😀

Nochmals 2 Stunden später (ich schiebe unserer etwas längere Wanderzeit grundsätzlich ja immer darauf, dass wir sehr viel fotografieren und filmen unterwegs 😉 ) erreichen wir nach einem etwas flacheren Stück die Lichtung der Hauspilhütte.

Ich bin hier oben jedes mal aufs Neue überrascht wie schön es in den Bergen ist. Der felsige Weg tut sich hier auf einmal in einen flachen bemoosten Wanderweg auf, der dann in einer wunderschönen Lichtung mit besagter Hauspilhütte mündet. Man kommt sich fast vor wie in einem Herr der Ringe Film und das ganze auf ca. 2000 Meter Höhe. Und irgendwo hier sollte Sie doch sein…

Ein paar Meter weiter um die nächste Ecke und da ist Sie… Imposanter und gigantischer als erwartet. Die Charles Kuonen Hängebrücke ist mit ihren 494 Metern Länge die längste Hängebrücke für Fussgänger der Welt und jeden tropfen Schweiss den man auf dem Weg zu ihr nach oben vergiesst wert.

Es ist ehrlich gesagt wirklich schwierig in Worten zu beschreiben, wie Imposant diese Brücke ist. Auf der linken Seite die gigantischen Gletscher, vor uns das Tal und der Dorfbach welcher, von der Brücke überspannt wird und an dessen Ende, etwas erhöht, die Europahütte, in welcher wir die Nacht verbringen werden. Auf der Hangseite kann man sogar noch die alten Wege erkennen, welche früher in Richtung Europahütte geführt haben. Die alte Hängebrücke wurde 2010 bei einem Steinschlag zerstört und seither musste man einen doch recht heftigen Umweg auf sich nehmen um die Europahütte zu erreichen.

Da das ganze doch wie bereits gesagt etwas schwierig in Worte zu fassen ist, am einfachsten nach dem Artikel die Bilder anschauen (hier klicken wenn ihr nicht abwarten wollt 😉 ).

Nachdem wir uns einigermassen satt gesehen haben, der erste Drohnen Akku leer geflogen  und die Speicherkarte etwas voller ist, gehts ab auf die andere Seite. Über so eine freihängende und schmale Brücke zu laufen ist schon etwas anderes (Menschen mit Höhenangst… viel Spass 😉 ). Eigentlich wollte ich noch ein “klassisches Bastian Sprungbild” machen, aber schauckeln und springen ist hier leider verboten… 😀

Von der anderen Seite der Brücke ergibt sich in meinen Augen eine noch schönere Aussicht. Die Gletscher, das Tal die Brücke und jetzt auch noch im Hintergrund das kleine Matterhorn. Ich habe total übersehen wie nah wir an Zermatt sind… Hätte mir natürlich klar sein müssen, da der Europaweg von Zermatt über Randa nach Grächen führt. Evtl. unsere nächste grössere Wanderung? Sie soll auf jeden fall eine der schönsten Wanderrouten der Schweiz sein… 🙂

Auch hier nochmal die Speicherkarte befüllen und dann zum Endspurt zur Europahütte. Wir sind langsam schon etwas gerädert und freuen uns auf etwas leckeres zu Essen und ein frisches isotonisches Getränk… ein Bier :D. Von der Brücke bis zur Europahütte ist es nochmal ein kleiner Aufstieg von ca. 30 Minuten. Kurz vor der Hütte bekommen wir Gesellschaft in Gestalt eines Steinbocks, der es wohl mehr oder weniger gewohnt ist hier Wanderer anzutreffen, da er uns nur gelangweilt begutachtete und dann weiterzieht.

Die Erleichterung ist Claudia und mir glaube ich anzusehen als wir nach einer weiteren Steigung endlich die Europahütte vor uns sehen. Eine wunderhübsche Hütte mit einer Aussicht die einem wohl kaum ein einziges Luxushotel dieser Welt bieten kann. Auch hier muss ich euch Bilder zeigen, da ich nicht weiss wie man diesen Anblick beschreiben soll (hier gehts zur Gallerie).

Marcel, der Hüttenwart der Europahütte empfängt uns herzlich, zeigt uns unsere kleine Kabine für die Nacht und lädt uns zum Essen ein. Lasagne mit Raclettekäse… Alles wird mit Raclettekäse besser sogar Lasagne :D. 1 Schnaps, 2 Biere und einen vollen Magen später sitzen wir mit Marcel und Kevin (Kevin hat mit seiner Firma Swissrope die Hängebrücke gebaut) auf der Terrasse und philosophieren über das Tal, den Europaweg die Hütte und die neue Charles Kuonen Hängebrücke. Zwischendurch hört man immer wieder den Gletscher gegenüber und einige Felsen den Abhang herunterkrachen. Direkt neben der Hütte stehen neugierige Steinböcke die uns beobachte. Mehr Alpenromantik geht wohl kaum 😀

Wenn ihr jemals den Europaweg lauft, stattet Marcel und seiner Europahütte definitiv einen Besuch ab und richtet Grüsse von uns aus. Ein wahres Walliser Uhrgestein, so gastfreundlich wie ein Mensch nur sein kann. Dank Marcel, du hast uns diesen Ausflug nochmals versüsst!!!!

Nachdem die Sonne schlussendlich dann doch untergegangen ist, heisst es ab ins Bett und Energie tanken für den Abstieg am nächsten Morgen. Früh raus die Sonnen einfangen ist angesagt.

Um 5:30 Uhr klingelt der Wecker und ein paar Minuten später stehen wir schon auf der Terrasse und warten gespannt auf das Licht (für die nicht Fotojunkys unter euch, es gibt für Menschen wie uns fast nichts Schöneres wie diesen Moment einzufangen 😀 nennen wir es mal eine Obsession 😀 ).

6:20 Uhr und die Berge strahlen in ihrer vollen Pracht. Wenn ihr also die Chance habt, verschlaft dieses Schauspiel auf keinen Fall 😀 Weiterer Vorteil, dass Bad und WC sind noch nicht belegt und man hat alles für sich allein :D.

Nachdem wir auch dieses Schauspiel eingefangen haben, heisst es für uns Abschied nehmen. Wir bedanken uns nochmal bei Marcel, der in der Küche zugange ist, werfen einen letzten Blick von der schönsten Terrasse der Schweiz und machen uns auf den Weg nach unten. Zurück über die Brücke, den Berg herunter mit einer Kurzen Pause am Kreuz und ab zum Auto (wir kommen auf jeden Fall wieder!!!).

Fazit nach dem Abstieg. Bergauf kostet Kondition bergab Kraft 😀

Fazit der Tour. Jederzeit gerne wieder! Der Europaweg mit seiner neuen Hängebrücke bietet unglaubliches an Panorama, Wanderspass, Aussicht, netten Menschen, leckerem Essen und einem Erlebnis, dass man meiner Meinung und Erfahrung nach, an so gut wie keinem anderen Ort in Europa in dieser Form erleben kann.

Wers noch nicht hat, auf die Bucket – list damit!!!!!

After Paul invited us 4 weeks ago to see and hike to the brand new Europebridge (new Charles Kuonen Suspension bridge) as one of the first and especially as the first bloggers we were excited like some little children waiting for Christmas to see the new bridge.

We started early in the morning… that’s the only bad thing about hiking, you have to wake up early :D. 5 a.m. … wake up, pack our stuff and go.

Straight to the car and to the motorway. Our tour starts in the north of Switzerland at the border to Germany (where we live), through the beautiful “Berner Oberland” straight to the “Lötschbergtunnel” in Kandersteg (City Name) (the only way to get there straight without driving around the Alps). Instead of that, you do have to pack your car on a train and drive directly through the mountain. EPIC 😀 Definitely one of the first highlights on our small expedition!!! Driving on a train.. with your car… is some kind of a scary thing 😀 The car is shaking in complete darkness… 😀 Scary and funny at the same time 😀

On the other side of the tunnel, canton Valais is waiting. In my eyes one of the most beautiful cantons in Switzerland (together with the Berner Oberland <- that one you have to pass before you can go the Valais 😉 ). So hop off of the train (with the car) down the valley and 20 minutes later we go up the hill again. So damn beautiful here... on the roadside, you can see epic landscapes, waterfalls and little shops selling fresh apricots (Claudia tells me those are very famous in Switzerland). Another 3 hours ride... and we arrive at our destination, RANDA. This will be our hiking "Start point". Paul is already waiting for us with a big smile on his friendly face (he is the nice guy from Randa who invited us to this little adventure). After a little chat about the trip and the exact way we have to hike (Paul drew a little map for us because the signs on the hiking path aren't that actual that we would find the new bridge without a map :D. Now you are reading this the signs are up to date so don't be scared 😀 ) our adventure can start. We are lucky, that we will be able to cross the new bridge. Two days before Paul told us that he is not 100% sure if the bridge would be ready.... BUT, now it is and we are allowed to cross it as one of the first WOOP 😀 The little village Randa (in my eyes on of the most beautiful villages in Switzerland) offers us what we have to expect on our 3-5 hours hike. Stiff up the way, all the way… and when I say all the way I mean it 😀

With that beeeaaautiful map, Paul drew us in our hands we start to hike. Even the map looks like made by a child (sorry Paul 😀 ) it appears the map is very useful :D. After around 1.5 hours we arrive at our first “milestone”. The 9 meter tall cross of Randa. You even can see that cross at the bottom of the valley where we started (we really thought we would be faster up here 😀 ). It is epic enormous fantastic WOOOP beautiful here. A huge meadow, flowers everywhere and a panoramic few…. like out of a movie. Epic!

After we took a little break, had some food and drinks and charged our batteries it’s time to go on. WE WANT TO SEE THAT BRIDGE!!!

On our way, a group of hikers (i would call it “more experienced” is crossing our way… they are flying.. it even looks like. They are so unbelievably fast… we need more training 😀 )

Another 2 hours later (normally 1 hour but we have to take pictures and stuff…. there’s no other reason we need more time ;D ) we actually arrive at a more shallow part of the path (finally :D) leading to a huge open part in the forest with a little hut on it (The Hauspilhut). I am speechless every time nature surprises us up here with his beauty-ness. It feels like we arrived in a Lord of The Ring movie on the 2000 meter height 😀 And… somewhere here… we should find THAT BRIDGE :D.

And then another 100 meters more, around the corner… there she is. Bigger, more massive and longer we had expected. A beauty and a beast of a bridge 😀 The Charles Kuonen Suspension Bridge with its 494 meters is the longest suspension bridge for people on this planet and worth every step you have to take reaching that beauty :).

It is hard to describe how incredible that bridge looks like… (i mean when you read this you have already seen it 😀 ) but if not… IT´S EPIC 😀 It is so impressive seeing that bridge hanging there. On the left-hand side, you can see the massive Alps and glaciers of Randa. Infront of us the valley and the “Dorfbach <- Villagecreek" and at the top of the hill in front of us the Europehut where we will stay for the night. On the right side, you still can see the remains of the old bridge, which was destroyed in 2010 by a huge rock avalanche. Since this time you had to walk down the valley and then go up on the other side… a huge roundabout way!!! It’s a little hard to describe how beautiful this place looks so you may watch our video 😉 (click here to scroll to the video ->or just read till the end 😉 ).

After we had seen enough, the first drone battery was empty and our memory cards were filled up we decide to cross the bridge. For people which are scared of heights… you should keep your eyes straaaight up 😀 It’s really fun crossing that bridge. It is swinging a little in the wind and you feel every step you do. So peaceful being alone there! And on the other side… an, even more, epic view to the bridge with the little Matterhorn of Zermatt in the background… could it be more amazing??? I don’t know if that is possible 😀

I totally forgot how close Zermatt is… And that’s the amazing part about the Europepath. You can walk from Zermatt (Matterhorn) to Randa (epic bridge and hut to sleep with glaciers and Ibex and all that stuff 😉 ) to Grächen (final destination on the Europepath) in two days. Maybe our next big tour? Maybe… 😀

And again… Shooting pictures, drone flying and then…. Time to reach our goal the “Europahütte <- Europehut“.  We need some food and some refreshing isotonic drinks… beer :D. From the bridge, the way goes up for another half an hour until you will reach the hut.

You can see the gladness in our faces when we finally arrive at the hut after another half an hour hike. We are totally done 😀

That hut is unbelievable beautiful, with a view like no other luxury hotel I know could offer!!! The same here… I can’t describe how beautiful it is, you have to watch the pictures or the Video!!!

Marcel, the innkeeper of the hut receives us at the entrance (2200 meter height) with a big smile on his face. After we had to take off our shoes he shows us our little room where we will sleep and after that, it’s finally time to eat. Lasagne with raclette cheese OMG 😀 Everything gets better with raclette cheese 😀

2 Beer 1 schnapps and a lot of food later we end at the terrace of the Europehut chatting with Marcel and Kevin (Kevin is the owner of the company which builds the bridge) about the mountain, the glacier, the history of the old bridge, the Europepath and of course about the new Charles Kuonen Suspension Bridge. In between times you can hear the glacier cracking and hear the Ibex jumping from rock to rock. Is it possible to find a more romantic place in the Alps? I don’t think so 😀

If you ever wander on the Europepath you have to stop there for a good beer and some food!! Send Marcel some regards from us 😀 He is one of the friendliest guys we ever met! A real Valais Guy with a huge heart!!!

After the sun finally went down its time for a little nap.

5:30 a.m. time to wake up and take a seat at the terrace to wait for the sunrise (if you’re not a photo junky, I can tell you… there is almost nothing more beautiful to make some shots with the morning light (especially in the Alps)) ^^

6.20 a.m. the mountains are glowing. It’s so stunning to see that. If you have the chance to see something like that, don’t miss it for an hour more of sleep ;).  Another advantage of the early getting up… The bathroom and toilet are empty :D.

After we enjoyed the rising sun it is time to say good bye. A last thankful word to Marcel for the amazing food and the bed, a last view from the most beautiful terrace of Switzerland and we are gone. Back across the bridge, down the hill with a little stop at the cross and then the final meters back to the car. We will be back, FOR SURE!!!

Resume after we are back at the village Randa. Walking up the hill needs condition, walking down needs pure muscle energy 😀

Resume for the whole trip. Every time again!! The Europepath with his new longest Suspension Bridge of the world offers an epic panorama, hiking fun, amazing people, good swiss food and an adventure that you can’t find on many spots in Europe!
