Ebenalp – One of the most famous Instagram Spot in Switzerland
Finally, we have some free time so explore Switzerland for you! And we are sure if you have Instagram you surely have already seen that famous picture with the Restaurant that is built straight into a rock wall.
Now you are interested? If yes go on reading if not… go on reading and find out if it gets more interesting 😉
HOW TO GET THERE!
It depends where you are located in Switzerland. The Ebenalp is in the Canton Appenzell (on the map top right side) and from Zurich, you will drive 1.5 hours.
Best way to get there is with the Car or Train to Wasserauen. From here you can choose:
GOING UP WITH THE CABLE CAR:
You can go up with the cable car which will drive every 15 minutes. You will pay CHF 31.– as an adult and CHF 12.– as a child.
When you arrive at the top you have to walk around 20minutes down to the Aescher Restaurant. It is a beautiful little walk with an even more beautiful view. Almost there you also have to walk through a cave so don’t forget to wear good shoes.
After 20minutes you made it! You can finally enjoy the view of that lovely restaurant on your back. Make sure you enjoy a meal there! They are known for their rösti (hash browned) and of course don’t forget to make one of the iconic pictures up there 😉
GOING UP WITH YOUR OWN FEET / HIKING ROUTE:
You love to hike and you want to enjoy the whole beauty of that trip? If yes, you can walk from Wasserauen all the way up to the Ebenalp. After a stiff hike up your first stop will be the Seealpsee. There you can enjoy the view and you can do a little break because from the Seealpsee to the Aescher it will be stiffer than before. But you will see so many beautiful places and trust me, you will have the best view!
Technical requirements: Medium difficulty
Physical fitness: Medium difficulty
Total altitude meters: Approx. 770m
Hiking time: 3hrs
And if your an adrenaline junky you can go down on a tandem paragliding flight. But please check before for a reservation 🙂
- If you do the walk from the top down to the valley, you don’t have to be as fit but it is technically more difficult.
- Go there from Monday to Friday (It will be very crowded at the weekend)
- Go as early as possible
- Good shoes!
Why not eat traditional food from Appenzell.
- Hash browned from the Restaurant Berggasthaus Aescher-Wildkirchli
- “Birnweggen” served with butter from the Restaurant (it’s like sweet bread filled with dried pears, raisins, and walnuts)
- “Biberli” you can buy them everywhere in Switzerland and they are made in the Appenzell. The perfect snack! It’s like gingerbread filled with an almond cream
