One of the most beautiful hiking tours in Switzerland.

Zermatt is one of the most famous places in Switzerland and that for one big reason, The Matterhorn. He is like no other mountain in the world. With its unique shape 10.000s of people, every year travel to Zermatt just to see that place. And that’s the reason why we decided to do the 5 Lake Hikingtour in Zermatt.

The hike is (without stops) round about 2,5 hours long and “medium hard”. You can do the route in two ways. First one hike up the hill and then go down by cable car or go up by cable car and then hike down.

We decided to hike down for a few reasons. First, we always have so much camera gear with us (round about 12 kilo), second, we want that extra bit of time we win hiking down to take more photos, third we just want to enjoy and don’t do sports activities and fourth because of Claudia’s asthma…. I think I don’t have to explain why hiking upwards isn’t the best idea.

So first things first.

HOW TO GET TO ZERMATT AND WHERE TO STAY

The answer to that question depends from where you travel and what you are using. We came from Basel by car so we drove down to Kandersteg, took our car on the train through the mountain and 1 hour later we where in “Täsch”. From there on you have to take a train because Zermatt is a “car-free area” so you’re not allowed to drive up there.

“Täsch” is the keyword when you wanna travel to Zermatt. However, you’re traveling there by car or train, Täsch is your first destination. From there you can book the “Matterhornbahn” up to Zermatt. This will take you another 20 Minutes and then you’re there. You can find some more information about that on the Zermatt website HERE.

When you arrive in Zermatt you have to walk round about 10 minutes to get to the Cablecar which will take you up to the “Blauherd”. If your not sure where to go just ask the nice stuff down in Täsch or when you arrive in Zermatt where you have to go, they will give you a map and show you where to go :). Its super easy to find!

THE HIKE

And then your at the beginning of your hike. You will start at the Blauherd. From there you will walk round about 20-30 minutes to your first stop the “Stellisee”. It is a beautiful lake surrounded by the massive alps with a perfect view to the Matterhorn (i could repeat my self now on every lake but I think you guys can imagine, its the same with every lake up there. Priceless beautiful with the view to the Matterhorn… It couldn’t be more beautiful!).

From the Stellisee you hike down the Mountain to the “Grindjsee” from there to the “Günsee” (which is perfect when you wanna go for a dip into the water) from there to the “Moosjiesee” (absolute epic with its turquoise water) and from there to the final lake the “Leisee” (which is a bath lake with a playground for kids).

From there on you can take the same cable car you took before to get up but now to get down. We just can recommend that trip because we never had such a stunning view the whole time. And when you wanna do a commercial hike and your ok having some tourists around you that trip is the perfect choice for you.

WHERE TO STAY

This depends on a little first of your budget. You’re still in Switzerland and Zermatt isn’t the cheapest. So if your traveling on a budget we recommend staying down in Täsch or surrounding. You can find cheaper hotels or campgrounds. For example, we booked a little “tent” for 33 CHF a night. You get free wifi and a place to sleep. You just need some sleeping bags and your fine. But if your traveling without budget you can find everything up to 5 star wellness hotels.
Some of you asked us where to book the tent we slept in because it was not a regular tent. It was made of metal and we were so happy with it (you know how it is to sleep in a tent…sometimes it’s getting wet but not in that metal shelter). Here’s the Link where you can book that metal tent.

Travel safe and don’t get lost or killed.

Tipps

  • Go up early – you will have less people, better light to take pictures and it will be not that hot
  • Don’t forget the sunscreen like we did. There will be almost no shadows to hide from the sun
  • Take your bath suit with you – and enjoy the cold water in those lakes
  • Put on good hiking or trekking shoes because the most time you will walk on gravel the most time
  • And of course, take your camera with you. But don’t forget to enjoy the place also without a camera on your eyes. Lay back and enjoy the beauty of nature!
  • Depending on when you want to make the hike check if its open, especially in Spring/Winter season.
